
Head of Music Department, FPA, Yogyakarta IIA, received a visit from Professor Christine Mauco of the University of Poiters, France.
Last Friday afternoon, on 22 April 2013, Head of Music Department office just had a short visit from Christine Mauco, a musicology professor from the Conservatoire de Poitiers, the University of Poitiers, France. The visit that was mediated by the Indonesian-Français Institute (IFI) had previously initiated by phone call as well as formal letter of visit request. Accompanied by an IFI staff, Ms Mauco was received by the Head and the Secretary of Music Department in department’s office meeting room.
The meeting started with a very brief introduction by the Head who described everything about Music Department, the Faculty of Performing Arts, ISI Yogyakarta. In the next turn Ms Mauco introduced her university system with its relationship to music education system practiced in Poitiers. Teaching music in Poitiers provided in three educational institutions, the conservatoire, the CESMD, and the university. The conservatory gives initiation music and dance education basis for children from the age of six to seven for 1 hour 45 minutes per week. This initial training then continued to the next two cycles of four years periods of further basic musical training comprises the initiation to instrument and choral singing, ensemble, performance, music theories, etc. At the end of the second cycles, learning achievement will be evaluated and for those who are capable and interested they could continue to the next level of the two to four years initial professional cycle to pursue the DNOP or National Diploma for Professional Orientation. After obtaining the DNOP music students can continue to the next higher level to achieve a fully professional competency.
There are three track accesses for the DNOP holder to continue to university level, especially at the University of Poitiers. The first is a direct access to undergraduate studies in musicology at the Faculty of Humanities and Arts, and then continue to higher degrees such as master and the PhD in musicology. The second track is a selective access music teaching in junior school program at the Institute of Teacher Training. The third track is a very selective access to the CESMD or Higher Education for Music and Dance Center, an institution that is a partnership of Musicology Department. The CESMD offers a double degree program, the Bachelor of Music in Musicology and the National Superior Diploma for Professional Musician (DNSPM). The graduates than can either pursue a Master and a PhD or become professional musicians. CESMD offers instrumental study only to limited instruments such as strings, saxophone, piano, and early music instruments (recorder, transverso, organ, cembalo, Luth, Theorb, viola da gamba, period violin and viloncello and song).
Prof. Mauco conclude with the statement that Poitiers Conservatoire as well as CSMD is open to international applicants for a six semester instrumental course, exchange student for credit transfers, and guest student. She also offers educational cooperation with Music Department to invite Poitiers’s musicians for performances as well as master classes through the mediation of the IFI.
After the meeting Mauco was accompanied by a piano student to have a brief tour around the music bulding and its auditorium, and also the General Lecture Building, to explore and get a brief picture of our music education process.
